common usage makes it rather a small thing to be standing up to I think. The 30th edition of the U.S. Government Style Manual (2008) sections 9.54 and 12.9b recommends the use of "12 a.m." for midnight and "12 p.m." for noon. Common usage makes me more inclined to stand up to it...

Not it's not! AM stands for ante meridien, and midnight is neither ante nor post. The same goes for midday. Convention of recent times has been to use 12am/pm, but that doesn't make it right.
