I might be wrong, but it seems to me as if Kate wanted to use the show as a means of promoting her thoughts and opinions (Im not saying this was her main goal. She was clearly on the show because she wanted to do well, and she was quite good.). Contestants are there to rearrange letters, dictionary...

Another important point of note: there's a difference between being mean to someone who is gay, and being homophobic.
