Re: Spoilers for Thursday 4th September

Only an equaller, but I suppose FEINTER might be allowed as 'more feint', even though it's not listed as a derivative of the verb.

Re: No Countdown next week :(

Doesn't this thread belong under "off-topic" ? - though presumably words with apostrophes are disallowed.
BTW, GBShaw never used them, as he didnt (sic) consider them necessary.

Re: Arithmetic

I agree with the banning of powers, as the problem is to use the four standard operations, whilst negative numbers can always be avoided by a simple rearrangement. However, it's likely that some combinations of target and given numbers could only be achieved using fractions - my example didn't use t...

Arithmetic

Has it been stated that fractions are not allowable in the numbers round?
For example in the last round yesterday (August 25th) the target was 342, from 100,75,50,25,5,1.
Could one have said (75+1)x(5-25/50) ? ;)

Re: Spoilers for Monday, 25th August

I agree that Carol (presumably having been thinking of that solution) did seem to correct what had been said, so I hope contestant had written down a correct method. I'd have been really unhappy if the game had turned on the result of the round. BTW, my method (out of time) was (75+1)x(100+5x25)/50=...

Re: Spoilers for Thursday 17th July 2008

I did (9+5+5-6)x75+1=976

Also the initial number needn't be less than 10, as you just get a 4-digit answer, and you just take the first two. (You do need to be aged less than 100, though. :D )

No, it took most of the ad break, saw 13x76 immediately (hence my initial cancelled post which got that wrong  )
As that didn't work, looked at 19x52, 26x38 being a non-starter.

The solution given for the first numbers is wrong, and doesn't even use the given numbers. :o
My solution was (50+2)x(75-25+7)/3 = 988

A few others I've come across - AREG (plural of ERG - desert, not work) and EMALANGENI (from LILANGENI). Chambers also has AFLAJ (from FALAJ) - useful in Scrabble, but they're not in NODE.

After having WALDOS in an earlier round, I was hoping ANSIBLES might also have made it from SF to the dictionary, but are disadvantaged by not having being really invented yet. (Though the device does give its name to an invaluable SF newsletter) :P

Brass monkeys

I'm surprised that Susie gave credecence to the 'polite' explanation of "cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey". According the Royal Navy archives, there is no evidence that cannon balls were ever stored on brass plates called 'monkeys'. In any case, if such were made with so ...
