I have to agree with you but if one person has a chance against him then it's probably Corby who is a much stronger player now than his original run. Great game again today Dave, SUNBATHE and TIRAMISU stood out for me as particularly great spots, as they're not -IER, -ING, -IEST kind of words.

Even I got 721, and I'm rubbish.

Surely Carol is wrong about nobody ever using the Motown term ever before in the 100-year history of the show as well? I'm sure I've heard it several times even though I've only been watching (avidly) for a couple of years...

Anyway, having done all that, I looked up the puzzle on the internet and discovered that when posed with slightly different conditions, it has a much simpler and more elegant solution, which is perhaps what Jon was aiming for in the first place? No worries Soo, we can all learn together, and then post it in this thread.

Despite repeatedly checking the "log me in automatically" box as well, I keep finding that not only does it not log me in automatically, but also seems to randomly log me out mid-session from time to time....

Hmm, you're right. I was assuming each pirate would keep his fellows alive if he didn't stand to gain financially, but in fact the Jon Corby definition of rationality appears to sanction murder as long as it doesn't hit you in the pocket. With 4 pirates, things are a little different, because pirate 1 can be outvoted by pirates 2 and 3, so pirate 4 has to offer them more than they will get in the 2 and 3 pirate cases. Since they're not getting anything in these cases, 1 gold each will be sufficient, leaving 98 gold for pirate 4. So ...

Also, do they all know all the other pirates are logical? Every pirate is entirely logical, and knows all other pirates will be entirely logical. Every pirate cares only about his own haul, so while he would gain enjoyment from the deaths of others, he wouldn't sacrifice even a single coin for it. ...

Well that was the first thing I assumed it might mean, but mine happily scroll away still even after I've looked at any new messages... yet some don't (after refresh etc etc). Weird.

Edit to add that some have stars on too, whereas others don't. Maybe it's just mine that's going a bit odd....

Can anyone explain the little icons that come up next to the (sub)forums and threads? I may be being thick but I can't see a legend anywhere. (It's particularly bugging me why some show a static icon of a some text, and some show an animated scrolling one. I can't figure out the difference!)

I don't know about OPALINES, as I doubt I've ever used the word, but I will add that CLOVERS should be allowed. Everybody must have used that word at least once in their life, yet Susie has disallowed it. We all refer to a four-leafed clover, don't we?

Well we've given it a good go, but the new forum doesn't really seem to be working out. There are hardly any posts at all. So the question is - is it now time to go back to the old, successful mailing list?
