Re: A-E-I-O-U

On a related theme, what is the longest English word in which all the letters are in alphabetical order? I know there are lots of 6s (BIOPSY is the one I always remember for some reason), but are there any that are longer? And no, I don't know the answer. Not in the ODE, but check out Aegilops (doe...

Why not 4? MUUMUU. UBUNTU is a nice one with 3.

Re: Words from unity

Ah, I did wonder when posting this if someone else had ever had the same idea. I wonder if this is the only nine. As I said further up, there's 20 of them. And that's 20 unique nine letter words, I wouldn't count STARTLING twice with different roots. Sorry, my reading comprehension suffers a bit un...

Re: Words from unity

I'll post them if you like, but I didn't want to ruin the puzzle outright with the first post, particularly as it was all done by mo-sheen and not my brain, which may not have been Simon's intention. Feel free. Use any method, by hook or by crook. Just don't kidnap refugees and force them to do the...

Words from unity

What's the longest word you can make where, starting from a letter, every subsequent additional letter added to the end gives a valid word. You naturally get the first letter for free. For example: N -> NO -> NOT -> NOTA -> NOTAM -> NOTAMS and S -> SI -> SIR -> SIRE -> SIREN -> SIRENS I've so far be...

Re: Recap for Monday 12th January (COC XIII Game 1)

I noticed that the letters came out quite unevenly - presumably Rachel lied on her application by claiming to be able to shuffle. Perhaps she admitted that inability - as it was one of the production staff that was shuffling the letters (seriously though - I think that has always been the case). I'...

Re: Game of the Week: First ever Poll!

What will be done in the event of a tie? I would suggest Paul, as GotW custodian, should not normally vote, except in the case of a tie-break (sort of like the Speaker for the House of Commons). It may be too late for this GoTW though, in which case let's hope there's no tie.

Re: General feedback

You seemed to have changed the word search feature to just state "dictionary corner" got it. Is there a way you could revert back to the "Jon Corby vs Kirk Bevins"? I wanted to see if I'd seen PERACUTE before and I'm sure I had so I did a word search which would tell me instantl...

Re: Your best apterous word to date?

In any game, QUANTISER in goatdown probably. I chose the S (was going for URINATES till I remembered that it took a Q, otherwise I'd of course gone Z).

In a 15 rounder, SCIAENID.

Re: Feature requests

Not so much a feature request, but elegance is nice - on the word search, if both players spot a word in the same game then the game is listed twice. Would it be better instead to list the game once and bold both names? Depending on how it's coded it might be more fiddly than it's worth though. Ther...

Re: January's Daily Duels

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birthday_paradox Calculating using the given formula, assuming 7500 total conundrums (a figure a bit higher than that is given on apterous.org before Charlie announced removing a few) and an n of 50 rounds, I get a 15% probability that some conundrum will be repeated tw...

Re: Strange Words

What are the strangest/best/weirdest words you've got? Mine would be JALAPENOS, ENCHILADA (those 2 in goatdown) and NAARTJIES. If you're partial to Mexican food you'd come across jalapeños and enchiladas quite frequently, along with other lovely words such as chimichangas, fajitas and quesadillas (...

Re: Bug reports

On the fifty conundrum duel I got to about 20-25 conundrums and then things started grinding by very slowly. I figured it was a memory issue, which seems to be beared out in the useful part of the log: Awoken! CX got answer from iface, sending ClientGame3390719434007381729 << GameEvent{key=339071943...

Re: Bug reports

I had a couple of bugs happen to me when trying to complete today's duel. I logged in and did nothing other than accept the duel, but when the first letters round started popping up I had a blank white screen despite the sound effects for numbers playing. I closed the window and the game and restart...

Re: Breakdown By Format

I'm with the other guys, the stats are great (I especially like the maxes - perhaps expressing them as a percentage too could be a feature?). One or two "nice-to-have"s would be to get back the old links to the games where a user hit their max score, and perhaps a summary of "last 15 ...

Re: A new set for a new season!

For those of you who abhor postage stamp sized pictures or blurry background shots, here are some nice higher resolution shots of the new set taken from the first filming day of the CoC a couple of weeks ago. Please note that despite my efforts with Photoshop, the set does look a bit dark due to the...
