Puzzle 5 attempt: I can get up to 164 by doing 0/ X 1/ 3/ 4/ 5/ 6/ 7/ 8/ 9/2. The first ball, and the first ball thrown after the strike, don't count towards the score so you might as well stick 0 and 1 there. Don't think the rest of the order matters. It was British Olympic gold medal-winning track athletes from 1970 onwards. Ouch, that's pretty scarily specific. I wonder if that suggests there will be more of the same this series (I bloody hope not). On further reflection, I think it was track and field . Nonetheless, yes, that's very specific.

On the subject of the best 8 letter stems, does anybody have a clue about which selection of 8 letters with no valid anagrams stems the most 9s? AEIOLRST, which makes a nine with 11 letters, looks promising.

The numbers weren't horrible. They were very nice numbers. If someone got the word "exquisite" would it be a horrible set of letters, because of the q and the x? :) I don't agree with your analogy. I would say, "If somebody got the word HAMERKOPS would it be a horrible set of letters...
