Re: Spoilers For Monday October 12th 2015
This was a very impressive performance imo. He clearly has done a lot of work on the Countdown dictionary, and he understands 4l methods. I don't mind him writing down a different word if it's not written down - it's declaring the same word that the not written down rule is aimed at.

Re: Spoilers for Friday October 2nd 2015 (S73 P64)
I think MLT is better than most of you are giving him credit for. He's pretty much not missed any non-apterous words, and his numbers are top drawer (see the elegance of his 784 solve). He'd have given me a decent game in my lounge in all the matches - on the show I wouldn't want to be facing him at...

Re: New changes to the ODO
Thanks Jon - to be clear, are words like gustnado allowed in countdown? http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/defin ... h/gustnado
If not, they're erroneously included in your list of countdown-valid headwords, despite being US English.

Re: New changes to the ODO
The issue is not that the whole ODE is in the ODO, but the flavour of the words which have entered the ODO is a lot more ODE-like. For instance, with the ODO before this update we never saw 15 random spelling variants (that's not counting the -ed, -ing variants thereof) inserted. With that in mind, ...

So the ODO has made some MAJOR changes. Essentially most of the words in the full 20 volume Oxford Dictionary of English are in. This includes obscure and obsolete variants. I don't know if this is the right topic given it's not about countdown history but about words, but:
Do you have the ability to answer what the flattest possible rounds with maxes of: 8, 7, 6, 5, and 4 - where flat is defined as most alternate words as the max? Would be v interesting!

Re: Stems (includes spoiler for Friday 14 Feb)
I suppose the logic in a round for your stemming idea would be: 1. Look for the 9 with the RETAINS+x+y combo. 2. Look for the 8 with RETAINS+x 3. Look for the 8 with 6 of the letters of RETAINS with y and z where y and z aren't any which you can add to RETAINS to make an 8. I must admit, I'd find it...

I suppose what you're asking is for a list of 9 letter words with all the letters of RETAINS in, and a list of 8 letter words with at least 6 of the 7 letters of RETAINS. For instance, VESTIARY has RETAI_S in it, but not the N. The question as I understand it is: consider a set of 9 letters with RET...
