The Dutch pronunciation of the diphthong AU is more-or-less like Jeff said it. I think a number of Middle English vowels were much more like Dutch, so this could indeed be an accurate throw-back (as Charlie suggests). I actually meant the Greek τραυμα (wound), wherein αυ is pronounced "ow"...
