Re: Co:Durham 2024

The venue has signposted me to The Duke of Wellington for the lunch plans. It's a pub that is a five-minute walk away and offers takeout. I'm going over to the venue on Wednesday afternoon, so will pop into the pub and enquire about making a bulk order. Link to the menu: https://www.emberinns.co.uk/...

Re: Co:Durham 2024

(ANOTHER) IMPORTANT UPDATE Hey everyone. Sadly, the venue that was originally booked for this event was permanently closed down at the end of February (though I was only informed on Monday after enquiring about having a look around). Luckily, I've secured a booking for a new venue — Merryoaks Commu...

Re: COLIN XX- your input desired

I can't wait for this triple-header. Couldn't think of a better way of spending a Friday night than Countdowning followed by a walk to the Fox in the freezing cold. The pre-drinks title is just brilliant. Re the poll, I've selected 6:30pm, as that's the time the Vicar of Dudley *prays* is open...

Re: COLIN XIX- Countdown in Lincoln, 27-28 January 2024

Yeah it was much nicer this year - we went on Friday - been refurbished, friendly and helpful bar staff. But yeah the dartboard is now a big telly and I think they'd have been a bit upset if we'd chucked arrows at it. The social club did a good job of providing the traditional colin activities - Di...

Re: Co-Event Suggestion Box

Agreed, it may sound simple but manually redistributing the letters packs is a massive ballache. Please don't mess the packs up when playing with them everyone! I also found the selections benefitted from the marvellous efforts of MSR and Beachy this weekend. I have to say I absolutely adored using...

Re: Co-Event Suggestion Box

Following from this post ... If I had one small suggestion, it would be that if there are table numbers, it's best to have them explicitly labelled rather than people having to infer them from the set numbers on the lids of the letters/numbers boxes, which are generally harder to find with the lids...

Re: Co:Durham 2024

IMPORTANT UPDATE Due to Durham’s annual Miners’ Gala taking place on the same day as the event’s original date (13th July), for which the hotel companies have naturally put their prices through the roof, Co:Durham will now be held the week prior, on Saturday, 6th July 2024 . My sincere apologies to...

Re: Co-event lunch arrangements

If lunch is provided then the cost of providing the lunch will affect any prize pot surely Unlike Scrabble tournaments, we don't have prize pots at co-events. Do you think if there were prize pots it would be more popular? I would guess the prize pot is a big factor in why at a scrabble tournament ...

Re: Co-Event Suggestion Box

This is something on my to-do list, because I've overheard it happening a lot. I'm on making a new batch of the foldable conundrum 'tents' as we speak, and will ensure they are included with every set of cards going forward. A stupid idea, to reduce the wonkiness issue pointed out, is to have a pie...

Re: Co-Event Suggestion Box

You can often get slightly striped effects when printing blocks of colour, so really does depend on what the host has available. I know when I made my cards I got through a couple of crazy expensive blue ink cartridges, so will be avoiding colour backgrounds going forward! Printing in colour is a c...

Re: Co-Event Suggestion Box

Does anybody have some low effort high impact suggestions for reducing the % of botched printed conundrum reveals? I had a botched conundrum given to me in at least 5/8 of the events I attended in 2023 which had paper conundrums. Reasons for botched conundrums reveals could be any of (but not limit...

Re: FOCAL Finals and MK Open - 25th November 2023

Thanks a lot for the comments and feedback regarding the conundrums and my hosting. I agree with Jack's view on FLOWERAGE being too easy as a con for the finalists. In typical Adam fashion, this was meant to be one for the openers, but I stuck it in the wrong file. Epic fail #2. Saying that, if it s...

Re: FOCAL Finals and MK Open - 25th November 2023

One other thing - if there's a grand final at the end of a tournament and no screen with the scores, it's important to announce the scores at the end of each round. My bad. I was a complete scatterbrain and overcome with nerves during the final. My board was intended to be used a score display but ...

FWIW, that's not enough C's. I had two shows in my octorun where 5 C's were drawn and another that had 4. Yeah, I saw your post about that last year on another thread. I think it's simply a case of the quantities of certain letters being changed every so often by the guys who shuffle them. 3 seems ...

Re: Goat/Co:Brum 2023

The consistency in the letter packs was because I sat down and sorted through every one of them in the weeks beforehand and gave them equal distribution (yes, I'm sad). I kid you not, one of the packs had 4 Ks in before doing this. I'm all for fairness and everyone playing with the same quantities ...

Re: Request for event conundrum setters!

Please please don't set conundrums with one of the players names in. Lots of people know at least some of the scrambles with their name, and it gives a huge potential advantage to that player. Twice in tournaments I've faced crucial conundrums where the scramble started with my opponent's 6 letter ...
