I know there are a few of us here partial to battles of the 64 squares, so it made sense to have a thread for such discussion, or perhaps to arrange games? I've played Phil Makepeace, who has an ELO rating and is strong enough to play in the British Championship  But my grade of 129 is far fr...

If anyone's up in Scotland this month, it might be worth showing off to some comedians. Define "up" in Scotland. Some of us are here. So what? You're still up in Scotland. You simply have the advantage (arguably) of not having to travel to get there. Had Martin said, "If anyone's goi...

Re: Scrabble Tactics
Keeping EIT isn't much better than keeping D. Vowel heaviness is the main reason. You want to generally keep 1 more consonant than vowel. ERT would be a far stronger than EIT, EIRT would be stronger still because you're closer to a bonus and reduce the random element which is enough to compensate f...

Re: Scrabble Tactics
Would be very tempting to change the W. ADEIRT gives bonuses from lots of possible draws, and by going second you give yourself more tiles to play through, boasting your chance of an 8. But you'd have to be quite confident to resist WAITED for 28. Fishing like that may always go wrong, and it gives...

Shurely midnight tonight would be 11/7/09 12:00 am? 12 midnight not 12am :) 12 midnight IS 12am. Not it's not! AM stands for ante meridien, and midnight is neither ante nor post. I recall someone cracking the 'random' number generator algorithm in the early days of DOND, can't remember the details though.
