Oh dear - I normally go birdwatching with my Opticron GS815 telescope with 20-60x zoom lens and tripod, together with my Opticron Savanna 8x42 binoculars....... first bird I saw through the telescope was a Slavonian Grebe....

Matt, I don't consider any of those hobbies geeky I certainly don't think birdwatching is geeky, especially given the success of Springwatch and Autumnwatch. It's almost mainstream now.
