You can click on the bar at the top, and click on 're-open (or undo) closed tab' I find the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+T useful for that feature on Firefox. (Don't know if IE does it, though.) My usual technique in that situation is to whip my foot off the accelerator so the car slows down but without the brake lights giving the berk behind a clue, so that he suddenly finds himself closer than even he is comfortable with.
